Leaf Pick-Up

In the fall of 2006, Portage Township initiated a leaf pick-up program in order to help township residents dispose of leaves without harming the environment in the process.  When the season was over, 300 cubic yards of leaves were collected and set aside to compost.  Since that first season the township regularly collect in excess of 450 cubic yards annually.

The annual township leaf pick-up starts in late October and runs through the end of November.  (Check the fall newsletter for actual dates.)  All leaves placed at the curb by November 30th will be collected.  The machine used for the pick-up is, in essence, a large vacuum cleaner.  Please help the township workers by keeping sticks and other dense material out of the leaf piles.    Since our equipment has a limited reach, please do your best to keep all leaf piles off the pavement but no further than 6 feet from the edge of the road surface.
