RT 53 / RT 2 Closure Updates

Image showing proposed roundabouts and improvements on SR 2 and SR 53

We get a lot of questions about the ongoing expansion and construction of roundabouts on State Rt 53. Bookmark this page where we will keep you updated with what we know.

While ODOT is responsible for the “Intersection Improvement Project,” it mostly takes place in Portage Township, so we are keeping a close watch on progress and doing whatever we can to support everyone affected by the construction. We understand it is an inconvenience for getting around in the area and the impact to businesses along 53 has been significant for some.

Here’s the latest:

SR 53 widening and roundabouts

The new roundabout at State Rd and Rt 53 is now open in all directions except South, as the exit and on ramps to Hwy 2 will remain closed until May 23rd. If you haven’t road-tested it, the seamless traffic flow is a huge improvement.

The widening of 53 has been completed for southbound lanes and northbound construction has begun. The road remains open for traffic going both directions and all access points are open along the way, so please support the local businesses as they strive to keep providing for their customers.

State Route 2

State Route 2, between Erie County and SR 53, Port Clinton, is reduced to one lane north of the Edison Bay Bridge for bridge construction through May.

  • Lane restrictions will occur for paving beginning as early as April. Work zones will still be in place on April 8 (Eclipse date).
  • After May 15, paving east of SR 269 will occur at night; paving west of SR 269 will utilize daytime lane restrictions
  • Numerous ramp closures are necessary at SR 169 and SR 269, which will occur Sunday night-Friday morning (ramp closures not to impede weekend traffic).
