The purpose of zoning is to protect public safety, comfort, and general welfare; to conserve and protect property and property values; to secure the most appropriate use of land; and to facilitate the provision of public improvements.
The Portage Township Zoning resolution, adopted in 1989 and most recently amended in October of 2021, regulates the use of land for trade, industry, residence, recreation, or other purposes as well as the location, height, bulk, number of stories, and size of buildings and other structures.
The unincorporated area of the township is divided into districts or zones as shown on the official zoning map of Portage Township below.
